Server settings for your panel (nginx and cron)

Depending on your hosting panel, MovieMaster works as soon as you upload it or needs a set of rules pasted once. Find your panel below: there are two things, the web server rules and the scheduled task (cron).

Which web server do I have? #

  • Apache or LiteSpeed (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk with Apache, HestiaCP by default and almost all shared hosting): nothing to do. The rules travel in the .htaccess files of the zip.
  • nginx (aaPanel, CloudPanel, HestiaCP in nginx-only mode, a hand-built VPS): nginx does not read files from the site folder, so the rules are pasted once in the panel.

If opening your domain sends you to /install and you get a 404, or the site loads without styles or images, those rules are missing.

aaPanel (nginx) #

  1. Go to Website, click your site's name and open the URL rewrite tab.
  2. With the file manager, open nginx-panel.conf.example from the zip, copy all of it and paste it into that box.
  3. Click Save. The panel checks the rules and reloads nginx by itself.

Nothing in the text needs changing: it works as is for any domain.

These rules do three things: they send visits to MovieMaster, close the private folders (core, logs, database, backups) and turn on the page cache, which serves pages without running PHP. That is why you should paste the whole file and not a single line.

HestiaCP #

  • With the default install (nginx + Apache) there is nothing to do.
  • If your server is nginx + PHP-FPM only, the rules go in a file: create /home/USER/conf/web/YOURDOMAIN/nginx.ssl.conf_moviemaster with the content of nginx-panel.conf.example and restart nginx. Without SSH access, ask your hosting support and send them that file.

cPanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk #

Nothing to configure on the web server. Just check in Select PHP Version (or "MultiPHP") that the domain runs PHP 8.2 or newer.

A VPS you configure by hand #

Use nginx.conf.example, which has the whole server block (domain, certificate and PHP included). Change the domain, the path and the PHP socket, and reload nginx.

The scheduled task (cron) #

MovieMaster needs a task every minute. Without it imports, images and catalog sync do not move, and the panel warns "The system cron isn't running".

The MovieMaster panel gives you the exact line for your server in Dashboard → System health. Two rules apply to every panel:

  • It must run every 1 minute (not hourly, not "every 0 minutes").
  • root or the site's user, either works. When root starts it (aaPanel always does), MovieMaster switches to the owner of the site folder before doing anything and hands back any files left owned by root. No sudo needed.

aaPanel #

Cron → Add Task: type Shell Script, period N Minutes → 1, and as the script:

/www/server/php/83/bin/php /www/wwwroot/yourdomain.com/bin/console.php cron

Change 83 to your PHP version (82 for PHP 8.2; yours are listed in App Store → Installed or in /www/server/php/) and yourdomain.com to your site's folder. If your line already has sudo -u www in front, it works too: no need to change it.

Before version 0.9.17 the task did need sudo -u www in front; if your site had errors because of that, update from System → Updates and on the next minute the cron hands the files back to their owner.

cPanel #

Cron Jobs → Common Settings → Once Per Minute, and as the command:

/usr/local/bin/ea-php83 /home/USER/public_html/bin/console.php cron >/dev/null 2>&1

HestiaCP #

Cron → Add Job, with * in the five time fields, and as the command:

php /home/USER/web/yourdomain.com/public_html/bin/console.php cron

Check that everything is right #

  • The home page loads with its styles and images.
  • In the panel, Dashboard → System health shows the cron in green after two minutes.
  • https://yourdomain.com/content/logs/app.log answers 403 or 404. If a file downloads, the nginx rules are not in place.
